not even leave the comfort of your living room when you have an Amazon fulfilment centre just a click away.
However, we believe – and we know – that small, independent businesses are the bedrock of our town, and most towns up and down the country. And, right here in Gosforth, we have a unique street which is home to a dozen local, independent businesses.
Whether you are looking for a fresh produce, outstanding locally sourced meat, items from a village style store or are seeking interiors inspirations, in need of podiatry services, want to explore your arty side, or even fancy a cuppa and some afternoon tea, Ashburton Road covers all these bases and more.
The fact that these are all independence businesses, enables Ashburton Road to offer visitors and locals a unique, special experience. Shopping local and with independent retailers has some real benefits, not only for the shopper but for the community as a whole.
Small businesses are unique – small businesses are run by real people. Their authenticity shines through and many items and services are totally unique. Independent businesses invest in the local area and many source products and produce locally. Independent businesses tend to keep in line with the aesthetic of the area, adding character to the community and, in turn, the community invests in its businesses. It is a symbiotic relationship that drives the local economy.
Small businesses are passionate – independent business owners opened their business because it is their passion. This shines through in the pride they have in their business and, when you buy from an independent business, you are not only getting a unique and one-off service and experience, you are also buying the business owners specialist knowledge and advice.
Shopping local creates jobs – Independent businesses are the largest employer of jobs nationally and provide the most local jobs to communities. Local employers are also more likely to pay a higher wage and encourage employee loyalty. Increasing the number of jobs in our community enhances Gosforth as a place to live and work and creates a healthier economy for everyone.

What is Turpentyne?
Turpentyne is a Fine Art Drawing and Painting Studio that offers skill-based drawing and painting lessons for children aged 4 and older.
Located in Gosforth, Turpentyne delivers a unique and highly effective approach to art instruction. Their proprietary curriculum empowers students by teaching the fundamentals of line, shape, colour and light. The studio’s mission is to provide high quality art instruction to the children and youth of Newcastle. At a time when school budgets are being squeezed and art instruction is being eliminated from the curriculum, Turpentyne’s dedicated teaching staff are committed to enabling their students to express themselves on paper and canvas.
Turpentyne is located on Ashburton Road, just south of Salters Road, and is the only dedicated art instruction studio for children and teens in the North East.
Drawing & Painting with Confidence
Turpentyne’s courses enable students to develop fine motor skills and understand visual problem-solving by using foundational principals of shape, colour, and light. These essentials are broken into simple steps for their newest students, which over time evolve into complex processes that enable more senior students to draw and paint with professional results.
The curriculum at Turpentyne is underpinned by the philosophy that anyone can learn to draw and paint remarkably. For years, students at Turpentyne have discovered they can achieve much more than they imagined through the effective use of art materials and an understanding of the principals of measurement, composition, and light.
Materials & Subject matter
The range of subject matter that students explore at Turpentyne is endless. Popular subjects include cartooning, manga, still life, animal portraiture and master studies. Each student’s curriculum is planned with their skills, interests and educational needs in mind, and they advance to new and more challenging materials and subjects as their proficiency improves.
All materials are supplied by Turpentyne in the classroom. This includes, but is not limited to, art papers, canvas, crayons, graphite, water-based markers, pro markers, coloured pencils, charcoal, soft pastel, charcoal, oil pastel, watercolours, acrylic paint, acrylic ink, and oil paint.
Focused Instruction, Life-long Lessons
The value of art instruction for young minds and creative hearts is life-long. In addition to developing fine motor skills and learning the methods of our world’s most inspiring artists, students take away something even more valuable, confidence.
Studies show that art instruction develops focus and confidence that helps children and young adults to achieve more academically. In addition, students provided with art education gain knowledge and appreciation of the world around them, and are better equipped to be successful in their personal journeys ahead.
Turpentyne offers once weekly fine art drawing and painting courses during term time. Students are grouped by age, and the student-to-teacher ratio is strictly limited to 6:1 to ensure the best attention and instruction is provided to every student.
Workshops are an exciting opportunity to take a short course on a number of themes and subjects including sculpture and crafting. Each school break offers a unique selection of subjects, often themed to the season and holidays. Turpentyne Workshops are open to all appropriately aged children. No experience is necessary.
